Established as a Crown Research Institute in 1992, GNS Science is New Zealand's leading supplier of earth science research and consultancy services, and one of the world's foremost earth science organisations. GNS Science employs some 300 highly trained scientists to carry out a mix of advanced research and consulting work covering all aspects of earth sciences.
With experience, expertise and capability in natural hazard and risk assessment, and spatial analysis of hazards using up-to-date technologies and methods, GNS Science staff are recognised internationally for their innovative work. GNS Science's integrated hazards research is directed toward reducing the economic and social cost of all natural hazards for New Zealand and international communities by developing an understanding of the processes that cause earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and tsunami. It is through such improved understanding that the future likelihood and impacts of geological hazard events can be better estimated.
Together with environmental concerns, community concerns are valuable components of environmental risk assessments. The multi-disciplinary Social Science team at GNS Science focuses on gaining a better understanding of the impact of the environment and natural hazards on society, ways of managing risk, and the social response to natural hazard and environmental consequences.
