Massey University was established in 1927 as an Agricultural College within The University of New Zealand. It became a full university in 1962. Natural hazards research is spread across four colleges of the University, in Business, Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Sciences. Active research ranges from business risk management to natural hazards planning, specific natural hazards and societal response to disasters. A Diploma, Masterate and PhD are offered in Emergency Mangement.
Specific research strengths in natural hazards include coastal erosion, floods, landslides and volcanic hazards by staff in the School for People, Environment & Planning and the Institute of Natural Resources. Social science research has centred on post-traumatic stress syndrome and the ability of communities to prepare for disasters. The University publishes the electronic journal the Australasian Journal of Disaster and Trauma Studies.
